Seattle Neighborhoods

Seattle is a 'city of neighborhoods,' with a wide range of distinct areas, each with its own personality. Picking several to recommend above others is an almost impossible job, and we recommend visitors to Seattle explore other areas, in addition to the few we've chosen here:

Ballard: This area in the north-west of Seattle has its roots as a Scandinavian fishing village, and then city, which was later annexed by Seattle. Many of the people living in the area are of Scandinavian descent, and Ballard's maritime history is seen in many small touches throughout the area. Don't miss the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks or the underwater observatory.

Columbia City: One of the most diverse areas of an already-diverse city, Columbia City is filled with a wide-range of local shops and restaurants representing a huge array of cultures. We recommend visiting the Northwest African Museum and then taking a stroll along the shoreline of Lake Washington.

Downtown: The busiest part of the city is unsurprisingly home to some of its must-visit locations. Get cultural at the Seattle Art Museum, enjoy high-end shopping at the Westlake Center, or just spend a few hours walking along the waterfront. Downtown is also home to the Pike Place Market-Seattle's original farmers market was established in 1907 and is popular with both tourists and locals.

Queen Anne: Most visitors will visit Lower Queen Anne for the Seattle Center, which boasts many of city's most popular attractions. Here you'll find the Space Needle, the Museum of Pop Culture, and the Pacific Science Center, as well as ballet, opera, and theater. If you venture up the hill to Upper Queen Anne, you'll be greeted by boutique shops and great views.
