Planning a Romantic Getaway to New York

New York City is one of the most happening cities in the world. What better way to celebrate your marriage than to take in all of the sites, sounds, and delicious foods with a honeymoon in NYC? With so much going on, it can be hard to prioritize and decide what the best attractions are. Here is our list of the most romantic activities, hotels, bars, and restaurants to dazzle you on your honeymoon in New York City.

How to Get Around New York City

Fly to New York City

To get to NYC, you'll likely be flying into one of three airports, JFK, LaGuardia, or Newark. Though all of the airports are connected by a variety of public transit options, all of them also have cab stands that offer flat rates into Manhattan. This is by far the most convenient, easy, and luxurious option for your New York honeymoon, but of course also the priciest. If you do want to take public transit, here are the methods from each airport.

Newark

From Newark, you can take the AirTrain to the NJ Transit station. Trains generally run every 30 minutes or so from the airport to Penn Station in Manhattan. Then from Penn Station, you can get a cab or the subway to your hotel.

LaGuardia

From LaGuardia you can either take the M60 bus to 125th street in Harlem or the Q70 SBS into Queens. From either of those buses, you can connect to a variety of subway lines to get into Manhattan.

JFK

From JFK, you'll take the AirTrain to the A Train or the Long Island Railroad. The A train is an express subway line that runs through Brooklyn and up the West Side of Manhattan. You can also take the Long Island Railroad. You will most likely have to change trains at Jamaica to get a train to Penn Station in Midtown. From there, you can hop on the subway or get a cab.

Getting Around NYC

New York City is an extremely walkable city, so it's key to get a hotel in a good location near the sites you want to see. It also has an incredible subway and bus system that runs all night long. While the subways are very useful and can get you pretty much anywhere you need to go, they can be a little complicated for visitors to decipher. If you get a central location, taking cabs or Ubers around is also a viable option and a fantastic way to really live the luxurious NYC life.

Where to stay for your Honeymoon in New York

New York is a massive city with a wide variety of neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and fantastic attractions and landmarks. While the best neighborhood to stay in will depend on what activities you want to focus on, staying in a more central location can be useful for getting around to different areas.

Stay in Tribeca

Tribeca has quickly become one of the most trendy neighborhoods in Manhattan, and it's rife with fun, romantic activities. It's quiet (for NYC) cobblestone streets evoke an earlier era and are lined with countless hidden-away restaurants and bars to host a perfect romantic dinner to celebrate your nuptials. It is also within walking distance of the West Village, one of the most beautiful and historic neighborhoods in NYC, SoHo, which is a prime shopping district, and the Lower East Side, a grungy-turned-hip hood for partying the night away. Tribeca has become a haven for the hippest wealthy elite in NYC and offers a great many wonderful places to stay, such as The Roxy Hotel, which has beautiful, updated one-bedroom suites and a classy underground jazz club for those nights you just don't want to leave the hotel.

Stay in Midtown

Midtown is one of the most touristy areas of New York City, with many of the top attractions such as Times Square, the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, the 5th Avenue shopping district, and the start of Central Park. There is also a ton of hotels that are the perfect venue for a honeymoon, such as the Four Seasons, with rooms overlooking Central Park, the stylish Gansevoort Park Avenue, with a luxurious rooftop pool and world-renowned spa, and, of course, The Plaza, the classic, historic hotel for luxury and comfort. All are wonderful places to while away long hours with your honey in your one- or two-bedroom suite in New York City.

What to do on your New York Honeymoon

New York City is filled with endless activities, but with just a short visit, you have to narrow your list down to the most important ones. It can be easy to get harried and stressed out in the City That Never Sleeps, so make sure to slow down and appreciate all it has to offer.

Picnic in Central Park

A great way to spend a romantic afternoon with your new spouse is to grab some sandwiches from Carnegie Deli and head to Central Park for a picnic. If you snag a spot on the lake you could even go for a boat ride.

See a Broadway Show

A night out at the theater is a fantastic way to get fancy and join in the incredible theater culture that New York has to offer. Afterward, go to Sardi's for a classic slice of New York cheesecake and some great people-watching. Check out our guide to the best theaters in New York for more.

Go Shopping in New York City

New York City is known for its incredible shopping. While 5th Avenue will serve up all of the big brands, designers, and department stores, the Lower East Side is home to tons of nifty thrift stores and boutiques that are utterly unique to New York. Need more options? Maybe our guide to shopping in New York will help.

Check out the iconic NYC Museums

What could be a better way to enjoy the culture with your honey than holding hands and wandering around one of the best museums in New York? From the new Whitney to the classic Metropolitan Museum of Art, there are countless treasures to discover.

The Most Romantic Restaurants in New York

New York is a veritable treasure trove of delicious cuisine. Ask any New Yorker, and they'll tell you that their favorite thing to do in the city is trying all of the different ethnic cuisines, sip on craft brews, or grab a cocktail at any of the hundreds of incredible establishments that line the streets. For a top notch meal at one of New York's best restaurants to celebrate your honeymoon check out the classic French cuisine of Jean-Georges or the unique forward thinking, farm-to-table fare of Blue Hill. For more casual, but still, delicious meals try Momofuku Noodle Bar or a small, delightful New York chain, Westville. For classy cocktails, Dear Irving or the Flatiron Lounge both offer romantic, intimate environments.

When to Honeymoon in New York City

In terms of weather, the spring and fall are by far the best times to visit New York City. The summer and winter can both be quite extreme, weather-wise. Christmas in NYC is also very romantic, but as it's a very popular time to visit, prices are also often higher, and you will see even more tourists than normal.
